Did you know?
- There are 18 Workforce Consultants (WFC) in communities across Alberta. WFCs provide employers with tools and resources to help them recruit, retain and strengthen their workforce.
- The Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG) helps employers invest in training that enhances productivity.
- Employers can be reimbursed up to 50% of the cost of the training, to a maximum of $5,000 per employed trainee per fiscal year. For unemployed trainees, employers can be reimbursed up to 75% of training costs to a maximum of $10,000 per fiscal year.
- The CAPG Portal is currently open for employer registration and the Portal will be opening soon for application submissions.
Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant (CAPG)
CAPG helps employers invest in productivity-driven training for their employees that aligns with the needs of their business. It is an employer-driven program meant to partially reimburse the cost for an employer to send their employee(s) for training. Employers apply on behalf of their employees and invest in training that enhances productivity and workforce competitiveness.
Who is eligible to apply for CAPG funding?
The CAPG is available to the following businesses and organizations:
- for profit businesses (incorporated and unincorporated)
- non-profit organizations
- First Nations and Métis Settlements
- the crown corporations ATB Financial and Agriculture Financial Services Corporation branches located in rural Alberta.
To be eligible, employers must be registered and operational in Alberta for at least one year before the application received date.
Who is eligible to be a trainee?
To be eligible, a trainee must reside in Alberta and be one of the following:
- an existing employee
- an unemployed Albertan who will be hired after completion of the training
The trainee must also be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or protected person under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act of Canada.
Who can deliver the training?
Training providers must be a third party and:
- be separate and distinct from the employer
- provide training as a main business activity and
- be in business and providing training for a minimum of two years at the time of application.
What kind of training is eligible?
Training must focus on productivity skills development in at least one of these categories:
- Business Process and Operations Management: Training that equips employees with skills to improve and optimize processes, operations, systems and resource management.
- Technical: Training that equips employees with skills to improve and optimize processes, operations, systems and resource management.
- Digital and Technological: Training that equips employees with skills to effectively use, manage and integrate digital tools and technologies to perform tasks, solve problems and adapt evolving technology needs.
Training must also:
- be relevant to the trainee’s job
- be completed within 52 weeks
- be in Alberta
- interact with a qualified instructor
- be instructional
Training can occur on-site, in a classroom, or online, and can be full-time or part-time.
CAPG recommends applications be submitted a minimum of 30 days in advance of the training start date if possible. Training included in a CAPG application can start once the application status shows as “received” in the CAPG portal.
What training costs are eligible?
Only costs directly related to training are eligible for reimbursement. This includes:
- tuition fees charged by training provider
- textbooks, software and other required materials
- exam fees
- approved travel costs
How to apply
- Read the CAPG Applicant Guidelines for full eligibility criteria and most up-to-date information.
- Ensure you have an account with Alberta.ca Account for Organizations. (You cannot access the CAPG Portal without an Alberta.ca Account for Organizations account.)
- Log-in and register your business in the Canada-Alberta Productivity Grant Portal.
- Wait for approval or check status updates.
- Apply to the CAPG when the Portal opens for applications in September 2025.

- Preventing Musculoskeletal Injuries in the Workplace: Join Alberta OHS for a free webinar to learn how to recognize and prevent musculoskeletal injuries, such as sprains and strain. These are the most common workplace injuries in Alberta, making up 41% of all lost-time and disabling injury claims.
- Talent4Energy is an Alberta government-funded project designed to connect energy employers with job seekers who have energy-related skills and experience. They will be hosting two Employer Forum & Hiring Events this fall in Edmonton and Calgary and invite energy employers from across the province to participate for free.
